Chicago in Phila: Mule Haas, Jimmy Dykes & Al Simmons, ca. 1933 - Framed
Recently traded to the Chicago White Sox... former A's Mule Haas, Jimmy Dykes and Al Simmons, along with Ed Geiger, sports writer for the Chicago American at the A’s Shibe Park, Philadelphia, ca. 1933. Haas had a great outfield tutor in Tris Speaker with the Athletics in 1928. He adopted Speaker's style of playing shallow, loping back to catch fly balls over his shoulder or dashing in for shoetop grabs. Connie Mack commented on Dykes in 1929: "Having one Dykes is like having five or six players and only one to feed, clothe, and pay." When asked who could provide the most value to a team, Mack reflected on half a century of managing and sighed, "If I could only have nine players named Simmons.” Haas, Al Simmons, and Jimmy Dykes were sold to the White Sox for $100,000 in 1932.
